Position with Centre: Learning and Teaching Consultant - Ethics and Practice Education (until July 2011)

Janet is part of the Academy’s group of learning and teaching consultants. She facilitates the Ethics Special Interest Group, a national interdisciplinary group of ethics teachers from healthcare departments in HE institutions. She also reviews mini-projects and is acting as a named contact for one of the successful projects.
Learning and Teaching Experience:
Janet is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Healthcare at the University of Leeds where she is the subject co-ordinator for Healthcare Ethics & Law.
Janet’s career in education began with her appointment as a nurse teacher at Leeds College of Health where she established the Healthcare Ethics and Law team and led learning and teaching developments in this subject. Following integration into the University of Leeds in 1996, Janet was appointed as a lecturer in the new School of Healthcare Studies and continued to develop the Healthcare Ethics and Law strand of
the curriculum.
In 2003, Janet was appointed to the role of Programme Manager for the Advanced Diploma in Nursing programmes and subsequently appointed as Framework Co-ordinator for the Diploma and Certificate group of programmes later that year. This role encompasses both management of educational processes and leadership responsibilities by participation in the strategic development of learning and teaching
in the School.
Janet is regularly invited to speak at conferences on ethical aspects of healthcare, and has facilitated many workshops and study days on ethics and law for healthcare professionals as part of continuing professional development programmes.
Other relevant experience:
Janet has over fifteen years clinical experience as a nurse and midwife both in the UK and in Kenya as well as experience of working as a research midwife in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Leeds. Janet was one of the first Research and Development practitioners appointed at the Nursing Research and Practice Development Unit at St James’s University Hospital, in Leeds
Janet has wide experience as a member of significant committees within the School of Healthcare, and has for several years chaired the Schools Educational Research Ethics Committee, which she was instrument in establishing within the School.
She is a member of the Editorial Board of the journal Nursing Philosophy and a reviewer for three academic journals. Janet was a founding member of the Executive Committee of the International Philosophy of Nursing Society and is currently Vice Chair of the Society.

Research interests:
Janet’s research interests and publications are within the disciplines of Healthcare Ethics and Law and Nursing Philosophy. She recently completed a PhD in the Institute of Psychological Sciences at the University of Leeds investigating nurses’ attitudes to euthanasia. She has also completed an exploration of learning and teaching ethics in the nursing curriculum, a project funded by the Higher Education Academy.
