Background
The Patchwork Text (P.T.) has proved an extremely useful approach to teaching and assessment for us and others in H.E. Research that we and others have carried out whilst implementing the PT has found that students evaluate it as stimulating, engaging and highly effective.
Our experience indicates that the P.T.integrates teaching, learning and assessment in a way that promotes both a reflective and critical approach in students. The approach requires careful planning to be successful and there are several pitfalls that require attention if they are to be avoided. Nevertheless the collaborative nature of the approach develops and nurtures skills and attributes that are valuable to all students.
Aims of workshop
To provide for the participants, through information giving and through direct experience of the method, an understanding of the PT approach to teaching and assessment.
To provide practical examples from our own experience to help them in their implemention of the approach. To provide a forum for discussion about the strengths and pitfalls of the PT and strategies to develop its more effective use.
Objectives of workshop
On completion of the workshop the participants will have :
• An understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of the PT approach
• Reviewed course material and discussed the management of the PT process.
• An opportunity to hear and consider the student perspective of the PT.
• Reviewed and discussed examples of students’ work in Patch form.
• Experienced for themselves the PT process (albeit in forshortened form).
