Background
OSCEs have been used in Health Professional Education for many years.  At the EIHMS staff have been using innovative applications of OSCE, designing some new approaches using long case OSCE, and developed a Masters Level version capturing the expertise of advanced practice.  The experience and feedback from OSCE examiners and students on these new methods has been very positive, identifying the valuable learning that is possible during the formative OSCE process.

Workshop aims
  • to disseminate innovative approaches to using OSCE in Health Professional Education;
  • to promote critical conversation between health professional educators from University and Practice settings;
  • and to engender best practice and contribute to contemporary knowledge and understanding of OSCE.

Outline of the day

The day will commence with a short plenary discussion.  Delegates in small groups will then rotate around a variety of OSCE stations over the course of the day.  They will have the opportunity to observe and/or take part in a variety of OSCE stations, including the Masters level OSCE.  At each station, the small group of delegates and the station facilitator will have the opportunity to discuss issues raised from this experience.  The day will end with a plenary discussion using a panel comprised of the station facilitators to answer questions.

Outcomes
Participants will be enabled to:
  • think creatively about alternative applications of OSCE;
  • experience a variety of OSCE stations;
  • and engage in peer discussion to develop best practice
